🎨 Colors in Korean - How to use in sentences

빨간색, λ…Έλž€μƒ‰, νŒŒλž€μƒ‰β€¦ How many Korean color words do you know?

Start with the image below to learn the basic names. Then take the next step: use them in sentences!

First, color names and color adjectives

In Korean, some colors have both a noun and an adjective, while others are usually expressed using just the color noun.

For example, 빨간색 is the name of a colorβ€”a noun meaning β€œred.” λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€ is an adjective meaning β€œto be red.”

Color nounColor adjective
빨간색 β€” redλΉ¨κ°›λ‹€
λ…Έλž€μƒ‰ β€” yellowλ…Έλž—λ‹€
νŒŒλž€μƒ‰ β€” blueνŒŒλž—λ‹€
ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰ β€” whiteν•˜μ–—λ‹€
검은색 β€” blackκ²€λ‹€ / κΉŒλ§£λ‹€

When you look up a Korean color adjective in a dictionary, its basic form ends in -λ‹€. Its form changes depending on how you use it in a sentence.

λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€ β†’ λΉ¨κ°œμš” / λΉ¨κ°›κ²Œ / λΉ¨κ°„

But you can’t turn every color name into an adjective simply by adding -λ‹€. μ΄ˆλ‘λ‹€ and 연두닀 aren’t Korean words. For these colors, use the color noun.

  • λ‚˜λ‡μžŽμ΄ μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”. βœ…
    The leaves are green.
  • λ‚˜λ‡μžŽμ΄ μ΄ˆλ‘λ‹€. ❌
  • 연두색 가방을 μƒ€μ–΄μš”. βœ…
I bought a light green bag.

So when you learn a color name, it helps to learn whether it has a corresponding adjective, too.

Now, let’s make sentences in three different ways!

1. β€œWhat color is it?” β€” Saying what color something is

The simplest pattern is color noun + μ΄μ—μš”.

  • μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ” λΉ¨κ°„μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.
    The apple is red.
  • λ‚˜λ‡μžŽμ΄ μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.
    The leaves are green.
  • 이 가방은 λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.
    This bag is purple.

If the color has an adjective, such as λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€, λ…Έλž—λ‹€, or νŒŒλž—λ‹€, you can also use its polite -μ•„μš”/μ–΄μš” form.

  • μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ” λΉ¨κ°œμš”.
    The apple is red.
  • λ°”λ‚˜λ‚˜λŠ” λ…Έλž˜μš”.
    The banana is yellow.
  • ν•˜λŠ˜μ΄ νŒŒλž˜μš”.
    The sky is blue.
  • 눈이 ν•˜μ–˜μš”.
    The snow is white.
  • 고양이가 κΉŒλ§€μš”.
    The cat is black.

μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ” λΉ¨κ°„μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.
μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ” λΉ¨κ°œμš”.

Both are natural ways to say β€œThe apple is red.” You can use the color’s name or describe it with an adjective.

2. β€œHow did it change?” β€” Describing a change or an action

Use the adjective stemβ€”the part before -λ‹€β€”and add -게 to describe the color something becomes, or the color an action makes it.

λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€ β†’ λΉ¨κ°›κ²Œ
λ…Έλž—λ‹€ β†’ λ…Έλž—κ²Œ
ν•˜μ–—λ‹€ β†’ ν•˜μ–—κ²Œ
  • 가을이 λ˜μ–΄μ„œ λ‚˜λ‡μžŽμ΄ λ…Έλž—κ²Œ λ³€ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.
The leaves turned yellow when autumn came.
  • λΆ€λ„λŸ¬μ›Œμ„œ 얼꡴이 λΉ¨κ°›κ²Œ λμ–΄μš”.
My face turned red because I was embarrassed.
  • 벽을 ν•˜μ–—κ²Œ μΉ ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.
    I painted the wall white.

When using a color noun ending in 색, add -으둜 instead.

  • 벽을 λΆ„ν™μƒ‰μœΌλ‘œ μΉ ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.
    I painted the wall pink.
  • λ‚˜λ‡μžŽμ΄ κ°ˆμƒ‰μœΌλ‘œ λ³€ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.
    The leaves turned brown.
벽을 ν•˜μ–—κ²Œ μΉ ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.
벽을 ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰μœΌλ‘œ μΉ ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.

Both mean β€œI painted the wall white.” Here, too, you have two ways to express the same idea!

3. β€œWhat kind of sky do you like?” β€” Describing a noun directly

You can place a color adjective before a noun to describe its color. To do this, change its form to λΉ¨κ°„, λ…Έλž€, νŒŒλž€, ν•˜μ–€, or 까만.

  • νŒŒλž€ ν•˜λŠ˜μ„ μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”.
    I like blue skies.
  • λΉ¨κ°„ 사과λ₯Ό λ¨Ήμ—ˆμ–΄μš”.
    I ate a red apple.
  • λ…Έλž€ 꽃이 ν”Όμ—ˆμ–΄μš”.
    A yellow flower bloomed.
  • ν•˜μ–€ μ…”μΈ λ₯Ό μž…μ—ˆμ–΄μš”.
    I wore a white shirt.
  • 까만 고양이가 자고 μžˆμ–΄μš”.
    A black cat is sleeping.

You can also put a color noun directly before another noun.

  • μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰ λ‚˜λ‡μžŽμ΄ λ³΄μ—¬μš”.
    I can see green leaves.
  • 뢄홍색 꽃을 μƒ€μ–΄μš”.
    I bought pink flowers.
  • 보라색 가방을 μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”.
    I like purple bags.

Both λΉ¨κ°„ 사과 and 빨간색 사과 mean β€œa red apple.” But since there’s no adjective μ΄ˆλ‘λ‹€, you can use μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰ 사과 for β€œa green apple.”

At a glance

You can use color nouns in all three ways, too:

λΆ„ν™μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš” β†’ λΆ„ν™μƒ‰μœΌλ‘œ μΉ ν–ˆμ–΄μš” β†’ 뢄홍색 꽃
It’s pink. β†’ I painted it pink. β†’ A pink flower.

Your turn!

Choose something around you and say what color it is. Then use that color to describe the object directly.

ν•˜λŠ˜μ΄ νŒŒλž˜μš”.
The sky is blue.
β†’ νŒŒλž€ ν•˜λŠ˜μ„ μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”.
β†’ I like blue skies.

이 가방은 λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.
This bag is purple.
β†’ 보라색 가방을 μƒ€μ–΄μš”.
β†’ I bought a purple bag.

It’s completely fine to check the PDF as you practice. Once you know a color word, you can use it in several different sentence patterns!

πŸ’‘
But there’s more: νŒŒλž—λ‹€ can also become μƒˆνŒŒλž—λ‹€ or ν‘Έλ₯΄μŠ€λ¦„ν•˜λ‹€. They’re all connected to blueβ€”so how do they feel different?

In the next post, we’ll explore how Korean adds different feelings to color words. 🎨
